Geography of Wine Lecture Video Quiz Notes LECTURE 1: INTRO TO WINE Wine is an economic activity of huge monetary value Grapes are the most grown fruit on planet earth Wine is one of biggest most produced agricultural product on earth Millions of dollars invested into wine industry, billions of dollars made in wine industry Wine has been on an upward growth curve for the last 3000 years French and Italian drink 50-52 liters per person a year (1 liter a week) 50% of wine was consumed by 5 countries: United states, China, France, Italy, Germany United states took over #1 slot for total wine consumption Every state in the US has at least 2 or 3 wineries Consumption in the US is rising across the board Total sales on wine surpassed the sales of beer recently China will soon be #1 wine drinkers 20-22 million acres of vineyards worldwide 8 or 9 billion gallons of wine produced every year wine is a major part of identifying and defining culture itself you can study wine and wine consumption from a health standpoint or epidemiological standpoint people focus on the positive effects of wine consumption on diet and health decades ago the French ate way more fat than average American but rates of heart disease and heart attacks were way lower than America – French paradox: they drink lots of red wine, lots of fatty foods, but they’re healthier than Americans Resveratrol in red wine and chemicals that are heart healthy Wine has had a huge symbolic role in some of the major heavy hitters of world religions over the millennium reason why wine has an elevated status as an agricultural commodity over other commodities Jews have incorporated wine as part of right and ritual for a few thousand years minimum Christian folks, Jesus, said wine is my blood drink that – last 2000 years right and ritual Historically 2000 years ago turkey & north African coast used to produce tons of wine
