WINE IQ QUIZZES IQ quiz 3: Standard 750 ml bottle (5 glasses of wine) Variety of other sizes o Common: half bottle 375mL (2 glasses of wine) o Halves of halves (splits 187.5mL) 1 glass o Uncommon: (Germany and Austrian) liter wine Magnum 1.5 liter (france) Methuselah 6 liter 9 liter salmanzar (full case of wine) Nebuchadnezzar 15 liter Vessel types: o Glass Bottles primary way wine is stored o Cork holds it in from cork oak tree (expensive) – infected w bacteria (corked wine) can dry out and desinegrate Synthetic cork- not natural, some flexibility, cheaper, does not have bacteria that can infect wine Flared cork for sparkling wine because greater pressure Glass cork sealed with wax Zonk- reusable Screw caps aka stelvin enclosure- decade or two, adopted early by austrailians- superior enclosure device, hold beverage in, don’t let air in, no bacteria in, not just for cheap wine Box wine- most marketed- franzia- cheaper, has foil bag on interior which is good for no oxygen and bacteria and light, don’t go bad as quickly, as wine comes out, no air penetrates in- standard box wine size= 3 liters (4 bottles) Take foil off top of bottle (foil kept mice and rats from chewing on corks), foiler cutter takes tippy top foil off, tearing knife on top of cork screw, or just remove the foil with your hand Butterfly or winged corkscrew- not so hot, will drill hole all the way threw the wine and can rip hole in cork Standard bartender cork screw, 2 level, double hinged- put it in the middle, spin the bottle a little then turn the cork screw, further in, less likely cork will break, use first lever, then pull, then use second level (10 dollars) Two prong or AH-so cork puller- works well with artificial corks, or older wines where the cork may be starting to desintgrate, uses friction- put on side of cork rocking back and forth pushing down, then twist while pulling up (5-6 dollars) Screwpull lever- don’t need force, good for people with arthritis (40-50dollars) Sparkling wines have tab to pull top of foil, unwind metal and hold top of bottle, and use bar towel to have it cover just in case it blows, never point at humans or shake the
