2 Unit V: Case Study, Fire Protection Unit V: Case Study, Fire Protection The installation of a quality fire protection system with an engineered extinguishing system in any facility is a first line of defense, which can minimize losses and damage to the facility and staff. Fire protection systems are mandated in many different types of buildings and should be engineered to meet the needs of the specific facility including processes and stored items, this is referenced in the NFPA 13 Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems. (NFPA, n.d.). This includes making changes and adaptions to the fire system in the event of changes to business practices and the facility structure. In review of the City of Washington Distribution Center, many areas of the facility planning needed to be upgraded and evaluated, including the entire fire protection system and water access. The City of Washington Distribution Center’s facility was outfitted with an automatic sprinkler system, fire pump engineered for low-pressure systems but was not properly certified for use in the United States, a monitored fire protection system, FACU, manual pull stations, a heat sensor, and city water service for the sprinkler system.
