2Unit II: Case Study, Fire ProtectionUnit II: Case Study, Fire ProtectionFire protection technologies are ever expanding and much needed in the industrial world. Having a quality fire protection system is a first line of defense against losses and is imperative for the health and safety of a facility and those employed within the facility. In review of the City of Washington Distribution Center, many areas of the facility planning needed to be fixed which included the fire protection system. The City of Washington Distribution Center’s facility was outfitted with an automatic sprinkler system, fire pump engineered for low-pressure systems, and a monitored fire protectionsystem. The storage rack system was also fitted with sprinklers due to the size and levels that housed materials. The structure is primarily concrete, steel, and corrugated metal which is specific to being fire-resistant. There was some plywood and sheet rock construction added to the facility for offices. Part of the risk of the facility, is that the original and use was not intendedfor storage of materials that were a fire risk. The scope of operations had continued to grow without adequate changes to the engineered design or emergency planning. The sprinkler fire protection system was upgraded due to the size of the building not the materials inside.
