Required Texts – Same texts as the lecture section of this course. There are no additional texts
for this lab. Students need to bring APA handbook to class
Lab Description and Learning Objectives :
This is the first of two laboratory sections that are a part of the two-part general psychology
course for majors in psychology. The purpose of this lab is to give an introduction into the basics
of research methods and techniques used in the field. This section will reinforce and strengthen
knowledge of the scientific method and research design as is discussed in the lecture portion and
lab.
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Explain the importance of ethics in psychological research, and evaluate the ethics of
other research experiments.
2. Identify different types of scholarly articles and justify their uses.
3. Critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of scholarly articles.
4. Efficiently use research databases to look for peer-reviewed journal articles.
5. Write an APA style scholarly literature review, applying their knowledge from Objective
General Advice: I highly recommend you use your APA textbooks and the resources I put online
regarding writing style. I also highly recommend that you and your classmates compare notes
regarding any assignments or questions. Group emails and group texts are a good way to go
about making sure you are on the right track. You cannot get through undergrad alone!!!!!
Evaluation and Grading :The laboratory grade is worth 40% of your final grade in PSY 111.
This lab grade is based off of your attendance, in class assignments, homework, and completion
of lab paper assignments. The final grade will not be curved. There will be a maximum of 400
points that you can earn over the quarter. At the end of the quarter, if you have earned 400
points, you will earn the maximum 40 points towards your final PSY 111 grade. If you earn 350
lab points over the term, you will earn 35/40 points towards your final PSY 111 grade.

Plagiarism Assignment (Due 10/12 before class; 10pts)
 Requirements and grading will be discussed in lab.
Citation Square (Due 10/19 before class; 20pts)
 This assignment needs to be printed and completed by hand and brought to class
Four Critique Assignments (50pts each)
 Each homework assignment requires the writing of an original essay critiquing the
assigned research article.
