1. Empires and Civilizations in Collision: The Persians and the Greeks a. The Persian Empire i. Cyrus and Darius- Most Powerful Kings- absolute power over subjects, life and death, make decisions ii. Tremendously Multicultural- Persia is so big due to the conquering of land-- when these kings conquer a new area they allow the citizens to keep their own religion, culture, language and more (just have to be loyal and pay taxes) iii. Satraps- allowing leaders to remain in their position once conquered because people are already used to them and obedient to them iv. Infrastructure- Roads (or transportation of goods, people, and information)—first postal system b. The Greeks i. Hellenes- another term for Greek ii. City States are independent from one another iii. Majority of transportation done on water (no place in Greece more than 90 miles from water) iv. Isolated Group due to Mountains surrounding them v. Athens: full of culture, art, and intellectuals // Sparta: city of warriors vi.
