Inherit the wind notes Act 1, Scene 1 -setting: Hillsboro -town is always as on trial as the individual defendant -melinda: girl hanging out with Howard -howard searches for worms in the lawn of the courthouse -howard tells her that she shouldn’t be scared of worms bc she and her family were once worms and blobs of jelly -she threatens to tattle and get Howards mouth washed out w soap -he calls Lindy’s dad a monkey, and she runs off -22 y/o nervous woman named Rachel comes to the courthouse area -she calls for “mr.meeker” -she tells mr meeker that she doesn’t want her father (the reverend) to know she is visiting bert cates in jail -bert is 24 y/o, thin, and shy, and I’m guessing a schoolteacher -she brought him stuff from his place (clean shirt, tie, handkerchiefs) -cates is a teacher, who taught his class about Darwin -Matthew Harrison Brady is visiting their town (whoever tf that is), ig he’s from Chattanooga -reverend’s name is Brown -were hangin out with a storekeeper, brown, mrs. Krebs, and corkin -some ppl are putting up a banner to welcome Brady -bollinger runs in, says Brady’s train is on time -lindy and her mom come to set up a lemonade stand -banner says “read your bible” -crowds of ppl gathered, and they’re all trying to sell stuff -mrs Blair looks for her son, howard -she pats down his hair with spit and tells him to pay attention -man named “Elijah” tries to get ppl to buy bibles -hornbeck, a clean guy in his 30s, walks around w a suitcase -mrs. Krebs tryna get him to rent her room -hornbeck writes for theBaltimore Herald -he buys a hot dog, not a bible -hornbeck mistakes Elijah for a writer -an organ-grinder carries a monkey, monkey takes penny -he jokes around with the monkey, saying that he is the ancestor of the human race -Brady is arriving on his train, everyone goes crazy -storekeeper says opinions are bad for business -ppl are singing, and everyone is mesmerized by Brady’s power in speaking -Brady is defending religion -they take picture, mayor, Brady, brown; Howie photobombs -Brady is now “colonel Brady” -tom davenport, young guy, introduces himself -Rachel pipes in during their convo, saying that cates is good -Rachel teaches 2nd graders -Henry Drummond works with hornbeck, Drummond is a well known agnostic -Brady comes back in with a scared Rachel -Brady is pale when they tell him the Drummond is the defense attorney, but he tells them they should welcome Drummond, not keep him out (bc it will make headlines if they win) -Rachel runs into the courtroom, looking for bert -hornbeck was there, he startles her -he shows her a newspaper bit he wrote about cates
