1The Making of the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message. By A. J. Smith. Eugene, OR: Wipf and Stock, 2008, 201pp. + xi, $31.00.The Southern Baptist Convention originally adopted the Baptist Faith and Message, its doctrinal statement, in 1925 under the direction of E. Y. Mullins. In 1962, this statement was re-evaluated by forming a committee. Chapters 2 and 3 explain the developments leading to the forming of the Committee. Important topics of concern were Biblical inspiration and interpretation, but there were other concerns as well that the Committee took up. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss the relationship between Baptist confessionalism, soul liberty and soul competency. Chapter 6 explores the work of the Committee itself and looks at those persons or groups who determined the outcome of the Committee's work. Chapter 7 discusses four areas where the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message reworked the Baptist doctrines: 1) Scripture; 2) Man; 3) Salvation; and 4) The Church. Chapter 8 is the concluding remarks.
