Instructions to the student: The reading worksheets are designed to assist you as you review the assigned readings in your Grove, Gray, and Burns (2015) textbook for this module. Read the assigned pages below, and answer the following questions. Chapter Five: Research Problems, Purposes, and Hypotheses As you read chapter five, you will notice that the authors have mixed together information about quantitative and qualitative studies (and occasionally even outcomes research). Pay close attention as you read each section to be sure that you are clear about what type of research they are referring to. Focus more of your attention on the quantitative process. What is a research topic? What do they contain? A research topic is a concept or broad issue that is important to nursing, such as acute pain, chronic pain management, coping with illness, or health promotion. Each topic contains numerous problems that might be investigated through quantitative, qualitative, and outcomes studies. The purpose or goal of a study guides the development of the _ objectives __________, __ questions ___________, or the _ hypotheses _____ in quantitative or outcomes studies. In a quantitative study, the questions, objectives, or hypotheses include the _ variables _____, the relationship among the _ variables __, and often the _ population __ to be studied. Give a definition for: a research problem, research significance, and research purpose. Be sure you are clear on the differences among each of these. Research problem- an area of concern in which there is a gap in the knowledge needed for nursing practice. Research significance- this indicates the importance of the problem to nursing and healthcare and to the health of the individuals, families, and communities. Research purpose- a clear concise statement of the specific goal or focus of study. If little is known about a topic, a researcher usually starts with a descriptive ___ or _ correlational _ studies and progresses to a _ quasi-experimental _ or _ experimental __ study. What is the purpose of descriptive research? To identify and describe concepts or variables, identify possible relationships among variables, and delineate differences between or among existing groups such as males and females or different ethnic groups. What is the purpose of correlational research? Examine the type (positive or negative) and strength of relationships among variables. Why are quasi-experimental studies conducted?
