Intended Learning Outcomes: The student shall be able to: 1. implement the Phase Locked Loop for FM demodulation 2. implement Frequency Discriminator for demodulating FM Results Needed: 1. The PLL may or may not lock on to the incoming FM signal. Tune the GAIN (and if necessary, the center frequency) of the PLL-VCO until you obtain lock. Examine the output of the PLL-VCO and compare it with the original message through graph Analysis of the Result: __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ 2.Perform envelope detection by connecting the filter output to the DIODE+LPF in the UTILITIES module. Graph the output.

Analysis of the Result: The output on Ch. 3 and 1 are the same. The Ch. 1 represents the unmodulated signal, Ch. 2 shows the modulated signal and Ch. 3 is the recovery signal or the demodulated signal which should be the same as the unmodulated signal. Assessment Tasks 1. How does the sensitivity of the VCO, to the external modulating signal, determine the performance of the demodulator? _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ 2. Define capture range and lock range of the PLL as an FM demodulator. What other parameters are important? Lock range is defined as the range frequencies over which PPL follows the changes in the input frequency. While Capture range is the frequency range which the PPL acquires phase lock. Whe n used in FM demodulator the basic PPL can be used without any changes. The VCO, phase detector and loop filter are important.
