DBA: The time period in which the story takes place adds to the suspense of the story. It is set in an isolated part of uncivilized America (Ohio) in 1820, when explorations westward from the east coast of North America would gain momentum in 20 years. The knowledge of the main character’s isolations, and struggles add to the suspense very subtly, since we no longer live in such a time, and have most likely never seen such a place. Furthermore, it adds the knowledge that the place was uncharted territory at the time, which heightens your fear- if you had known what was going on then. The surprise ending- Mrs. Murlock’s death at the paws of the wild animal- was very subtle. You had to
