O’Donnell 1 John O’Donnell Webb Supervision April 2, 2019 A Supervisor’s Responsibility in the Success of a Small Business Small businesses account for over 55% of jobs in the United States, according to the Small Business Administration (Chhabra, Esha). A portion of these jobs belong to dedicated leaders in supervisor positions. Supervisors can make or break an organization, and they ultimately determine the success of a small business. These leaders are responsible for organizing employees, managing conflict, distributing information, and setting goals for their team members ( Faris, Stephanie) . Supervisors in a small company are usually only responsible for a small group of employees. It is their obligation to make sure these employees are doing their jobs correctly and to act as a mentor for them. Someone in a supervisor position most likely has experience in the kind of work their employees are doing. For example, a supervisor for a construction crew most likely worked as a laborer in the past and has knowledge about the specific work his or her employees are doing. This credibility results in more respect from employees and gives the supervisor the ability to act as a mentor for workers. The supervisor is then able organize work flow within the company with confidence and is able to ensure the employees understand their duties. By monitoring employees and being able to teach them how to complete tasks, the supervisor can also ensure employee productivity.

O’Donnell 2 It is important that a supervisor has the mindset of a leader. When supervisors help employees see their work as meaningful, give them the resources they need to get the job done, and express appreciation for their accomplishments, the supervisors are contributing to positive results and are making employees feel satisfied at the same time. Each supervisor should pick a leadership style the aligns with their personality and the type of company they work for (Certo, Samuel). The purpose of a leader is not to control, but to delegate. If a supervisor is not comfortable delegating work and feels as if only they can do the job correctly, then the company will never be successful. Supervisors who think about how much they can control end up micro- managing tasks that should be delegated and trusted to employees. Micro- managing is when someone tries to control every part of an enterprise or activity, even small tasks. Delegation is essential to growing a small business, and micro-managing will keep a company small forever ( Faris, Stephanie).
