Oedipus, one of the greatest tale of all the time. The son who was destined to kill his father andmarry his mother. However,Oedipus El Reyby Luis Alfaro was a modern day story but with amixture of Greek tragedy. The opening night of the play was on April 26th, 2019 and the play waspresented till May 5th, 2019. The audience could connect to the story as there is a modern twistto the play. The concept maybe old but the setting was present which I feel was the reason whymost audience could relate to the play. It was a realistic play that most audience could connectto.Oedipus El Rey, a Greek tale with a modern setting. The setting was a modern day Chicano gangculture of Southern California, Los Angeles. I think the playwright chose a modern setting, eventhough the story was a very old Greek tale, for the audience to actually relate to the play. Thestory maybe old but relating it to American prison system today and the actors asking questionabout fate and destiny seemed like a challenge to make the audience a part of the act. This playis about a place where everyone is caged in their own desperation and violence. Do you thinkone man could transcend his own story?Directed by Deanna L. Downes with energetic performance, dramatic lighting and music, andexcellent use of set make a powerful impression of the play. The play opens in a prison with agroup of people in orange scrubs and police uniform who narrates the story of Oedipus. Thedirector had a great choice of wonderfully intensive visual effects, like when the three owlsvisits Oedipus. The director had the actors geared up since the actors energetically runs aroundthe stage, fights, work out, and climb up and down the bars. For instance, when the actorsworks out or runs around the stage and the next moment they say their dialogue without a puffof exercise or tiredness. The shows makes quite an impression on the eyes.
