Definitions (10) define the following 1. Sensation – the process by which our sensory receptors and nervous system receive and represent stimulus energies from our environment 2. REM – Rapid Eye Movement sleep. (fifth/fourth) stage of sleep. Recurring stage of sleep where vivid dreams commonly occur. Also known as paradoxical sleep because muscles are relaxed. 3. Learning – a relatively permanent change in an organisms behavior due to experience 4. Social learning theory – theory that states we learn social behavior by observing and imitating and by being rewarded or punished 5. Distributed practice 6. Muller-lyer illusion – both AB and BC are perceived as the same length when in reality they are not. AB is actually longer than BC. An example of size-distant relationship. 7. Chemical senses 8. Syntax – the rules for combining words into grammatically sensible sentences in a given language 9. Cognition – all the mental activities associated with thinking, knowing, remembering, and communicating
