Some of the emblems that I use are the OK and peace sign. Since I grew up in the ’80s and good old hair bands, I use the raised index and little finger to say rock out. To a lot of the kids I work with I regularly give them the thumbs up to show them they completed a task or answered a question correctly. Nonverbal communication has been claimed to account for up to 93% of the impact of any verbal message. There are many types of nonverbal communication, most of which are usually used unconsciously and may be interpreted in many ways, often being regarded as a more reliable source of information than the spoken word, particularly regarding emotion (Phillips, 1993.) In Germany, Brazil, Russia, and many other countries around the world, the OK sign is a very belligerent gesture because it is used to represent a private bodily orifice. The OK sign certainly does mean “okay” in the United States, yet in Japan, it means “money,” and it is normally used to signify “zero” in France.
