Solubility and Acid/Base Chemistry of Organic Compounds Compound 1 Experimental Part I Solubility and Acid/Base Chemistry of an Organic Acid BENZOIC ACID A. Solvent: ETHER Step 1. Add ~ 1 mL of ether to each of two vials (identified as V1 and V2). Add approximately a spatula tip of solid benzoic acid. Cap and shake carefully. Questions for Step 1 Does benzoic acid dissolve or not dissolve in ether? Explain. Step 2. If the solid dissolved in ether, add ~ 1 mL aqueous HCl to V1. Cap and shake very carefully. Questions for Step 2 Should a reaction have occurred? If so, show the overall reaction. If a reaction should have occurred, what layer (ether or water) is the product dissolved in? Explain your answer. If no reaction should have occurred, explain why. Step 3 . If the solid dissolved in ether, add ~ 1 mL of aqueous 10% NaOH to vial V2. Cap and shake carefully. Questions for Step 3 Should a reaction have occurred? If so, show the overall reaction.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
