Banned Books Johnny Got His Gun “The Dead”: Graded Discussion Questions 1. What significance can you attribute to Trumbo naming the main character Joe? The significance of Trumbo naming the main character Joe is the idea of the “average Joe” in America. He is trying to show the average Joe can get hurt in warfare. He is trying to dispute the propaganda ideas of plain folks being able to go into war. He is trying to say it is just as easy to get hurt in war as is it to join the war. 2. Why does Trumbo go into such great detail describing Joe’s life in Colorado? Trumbo goes into such great detail describing Joe’s life in Colorado because he is trying to say that Joe had an average life and these atrocities still happened to him. It is also showing that having a good childhood doesn’t mean nothing bad is gonna happen to you. He is trying to say that war injuries are non discriminant. 3. Even though the novel takes place in Joe’s head, why does Trumbo write in the third person?
