In t h e business printin g and copyin g industry, f nishing refers to die cutting, embossing, foil stamping, collating, trimming, stapling, drilling holes, tabbing, folding, binding and so forth. How a piece is fnished can have as much impact on the recipient as a striking layout, creative use of type and illustration, and precise printing. FOCUS ON FOLDING. Innovative folding is an inexpensive way to add a distinctive look to documents. Consider a gate fold where left and right flaps open to reveal a message. Or a Z fold that opens like an accordion. Or a French fold, where paper is folded in half, then in half again (great for announcements). Or a step fold, where pages have slightly increasing widths that can be used as a series of tabs. BINDERY OPTIONS. Plastic comb binding, available in a variety of widths and colors, is inexpensive. Coil binding, especia l ly the colorful plastic type, has a contemporary look .
