HIST 106 Dr. Carney Spring 2007 Response #2 Throughout this semester you have read several books documenting different issues confronting Americans throughout the twentieth century: 1. Upton Sinclair, The Jungle 2. Richard Wright, Native Son 3. Michael Harrington, The Other America 4. C. Vann Woodward, The Strange Career of Jim Crow In a brief paper (2-3 pages) discuss the way each of these authors approached American society. What problems did they see? What solutions did they offer? What do these four books tell us about modern American life? Finally, in what ways do these four books challenge, confront, or cohere to the idea of the promise of America discussed at the beginning of the semester? As always, be creative. Format : You must included one specific example from each book to develop your argument. In addition, essays should be typed, double-spaced, and about three (3) pages long.
