The Great War, 1914-1918 1. Causes a. US not involved until 1917 b. Began because of Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand i. Visiting Serbia ii. Killed June 28, 1914 iii. Austria Declares War iv. Alliance system – Germany & Russia soon get involved, Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire join Germany; Italy, GB, and France join Allies c. Woodrow Wilson Pres. at this time i. Does not want to get involved ii. Most Americans don’t like the idea of sending people to fight in European affairs iii. Roosevelt wanted to go to war 2. U.S. Neutrality Wilson hopes to keep US neutral Traditionally isolationist i. Spike of international relations during Roosevelt’s presidency (as well as McKinney) a. Sympathies i. For England 1. Both speak English 2. natural ties 3. Rev. and war of 1812 are way in the past ii. For France 1. helped us w/ Rev. War 2. Statue of Liberty iii. Have decent diplomatic relationships w/ Russia iv. Most American Families leaned toward the favor of the Allies 1. had w. European protestant Backgrounds v. Individuals and private banks gave loans to the Allies (even Germany etc) but more gave $ to France and England b. U-Boats i. Germany begins submarine war ii. 1. most sunk near GB iii. irritating for US because sinking everything, inc. US ships and GB
