Inflexible iii. Raised Tariffs in response e. Eventually Americans who lost homes came to congregate in “shantytowns” aka “Hoovervilles” 2. Summer 1932 a. 20,000 WWI veterans petitioned congress, came to DC and asked congress to advance their bonuses b. Settled in Anakosta Flats (Hoovervilles) i. Police were sent to look out for crime ii. Scuffle and shots fired iii. 2 veterans are killed iv. Gen. Douglas McArthur sent in 1. Intent was to force veterans to disperse 2. gets rough 3. 11 wk old baby killed 3. The Dust Bowl a. At its worst in 1935 b. Caused by high temps. Little rain, wind, locus/grasshoppers c. Farmers didn’t know how to properly take care of land d. Stories about people drowning in dust; crop being eliminated in one storm i. Grasshoppers/locus ate everything because green stuff was gone
