COLLEGE OF MEDICINE AND ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCESRESEARCH STRATEGY 2017-2020The College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) University of Sierra Leone, isthe main institution for training of health professionals in Sierra Leone. It has strong linkswith the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS) and is one of the few institutions in thecountry conducting health research. COMAHS recognises that sustainable research isfundamental to building the character of a university or college, its reputation and itscontributions to society. In this regard, it has been a leader in the generation andcommunication of health research in the country, with the publication of rigorously peer-reviewed publications. It has also created close and enduring relationships with counterpartsin the Ministry of Health and other key bodies in the research uptake process.COMAHS has a growing number of active research and training collaborations withinternational partners, including (among others) Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine[LSTM] (UK), London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine [LSHTM] (UK), BerlinUniversity (Germany) and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (USA). Thesepartnerships have built upon the strong research interest within COMAHS, have developedhuman capacity mainly in health systems research and clinical trials, and have resulted innew and improved physical infrastructure. Building on existing research projects, COMAHS isworking towards becoming a national leader in health system research and capacitystrengthening for credible, relevant research for effective policy-making and practice inSierra Leone.This strategy serves both as a reference point and the basis for activities which ensure thatresearch contributes fully towards enhancing the reputation of COMAHS, at the university,national, regional and international levels. The overall goal is to cultivate a sustainableresearch culture, by increasing the proportion of academic staff conducting needs-basedresearch and producing publications and other outputs of the highest quality. Researchcapacity building, based on current efforts at COMAHS, is pivotal in realising this goal. Thestrategy will support the development of a platform for concerted effort at Faculty, Schooland College levels, that in turn speaks to the research objectives of the University of SierraLeone.. Research activities should also speak to needs at the national level, so as to ensurethat COMAHS provides the necessary evidence to inform policy and practice as the countryrebuilds and strengthens the health system.To ensure maximum buy-in, this strategy wasdeveloped through consultations involving stakeholders at the national level (Ministry ofHealth and Sanitation), university level (Research Department at the University of Sierra
