Digestion is a multi-step process. Ruminant Digestion Esophagus Rumen Reticulum Omasum Abomasum Direct measure of metabolism – direct calorimetry Indirect measure of metabolism – respirometry Different tissues have a different metabolic rate (MR) % total MR is greatest in core organs, smallest mass % MR increases after a meal Pythons build a new digestive system after every meal Smaller animals have a higher mass-specific MR Cost of running decreases as regularly as body size increases For running, swimming, or flying, the cost of locomotion initially decreases then increases (the same effect with changing gait) For a given mass, it is cheaper to swim, then fly, then run. Thermal neutral zone lies entirely below an endotherm’s normal body temperature. Tb is an extension of negative sloped line. In general, an increase in 10 degrees Celsius causes a 2-3 fold increase in oxygen consumption Lizards acclimated to a lower temperature have a higher MR at any temperature Acclimation can affect Q10. It is not fixed. Also, note that Q10 changes with temperature. Core body temperature is constant, but body temperature is not uniform.
