1A Proposal to Hire a Muslim Chaplain for the Youth at Masjid-ul Mumineen, Houston,Texas, USAMotto: Chaplaincy Role in Community Development, A Critical Need in 21st Century!PreambleOur community, the Nigerian Muslim Association of Greater Houston (NMAGH)otherwise known as Masjid-ul Mumineen, has existed for over a quarter of a century. Its originstemmed from some Nigerians who came to the United States for their college and graduateschool studies, who decided to stay in Houston to build careers, develop businesses and raisefamilies after successfully completing their studies. The need for networking, socialization, cultural development and religious fellowship inevitably led to the establishment of theNMAGH. Our community has systematically moved from offering a social/cultural focus to afull Islamic community providing a range of services. The second generation of Nigerian-Americans has come of age. In ensuring that we dulyattend to the needs of all age groups in the community, we have developed programs customizedfor different groups. Consequently, our masjid is now being utilized as a multipurposecommunity center that serves various constituencies: adults and children have access to Arabiclanguage classes and an Islamic school, respectively; professionals have access to a networkingcenter; grandparents have access to a rejuvenating center; and all groups and associations alsohave access to a meeting center. Our community is a very diverse one. It is not only Nigerian, but it is also comprised ofAfrican Americans who are regularly joining the community. Our population together with otherAfrican American is close to 2,000 of which the percentage of youth is 45%. On the whole, youth is well adapted. However, some are in-between, while a few are performing below
2expectations. So, because of these few individuals that are performing below expectation andthose who are in-between, I want to seek the indulgence of the management of this institution,Masjid-ul Mumineen to hire a Chaplain whose responsibility is to coordinate the affairs of ouryouth, who will be the leaders of tomorrow.
