Word Count: 749 words The contribution of “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” to America’s imagination of Asians Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, directed by Nagisa Oshima openly explores Japanese militaristic culture in a non-criticizing way. In addition to his input on war-time Japan, Oshima’s emphasis in presenting social issues, a common theme in many of his works helped the film gain international praise. Therefore stereotypes in this film are not heavily amplified. This essay will discuss how the film influences representation of Japanese people and its culture, referring to visual elements and dialogue. It will conclude that the film contributes to stereotypes and imaginations in a non-negative way and its Japanese characters serve a greater purpose than solely showing “otherness”. Firstly, the film presents Asian discourse through emphasizing the cultural difference between East and West. This is seen when Lawrence mentions “We won’t kill ourselves because it’s the coward’s way out” and Hara replies “I’ll admire you more if you were dead.” From a Japanese point of view, one conducts “harakiri” to show responsibility towards their mistakes.
