My wish: Protect our oceans; Environmental Preservation This video focuses on the importance of the preserving the ocean as it is the main life support system on earth, a huge social issue. What makes it such a social issue is that the ocean is somehow connected to everybody and everything; it shapes the earth, the climate and is a significant key to both human and animal life. With just even that fact, this makes this social issue extremely important to me. With the rapid increase in human population and technological advances, the oceans future is a significant global concern. Sylvia Earle uses both personal experiences and shocking facts to express her point of view, that in order to protect future generations from the harm we are doing to our ecosystem, changes must occur now (Earle, 2009). A different perspective on this same issue is that vast expanses of open ocean protection should not come before near-shore waters are secured. Coastal waters not only have a greater diversity of species, but they also face more immediate threats from energy extraction, tourism, development, habitat degradation and overfishing. If we start focusing on the big picture instead of one piece at a time, not only do we leave these places at immense risk but we’re not really accomplishing the goal of protecting the seas (Rocha, 2018). My current perspective on the issue after having explored the topic is that I more agree with Sylvia Earle, the time for change is now when there’s still the opportunity for change. I strongly
