Geology 111 Section 12 Chapter 1 http://www.gsfc.nasa.gov/scienceques2002/20021101.htm I found this article very interesting. It was a simple question of “Why is the Earth round?” Dr. David Stern of Goddard University answered and informed me of some interesting reasons as to why the earth is indeed round. He begins by saying that is makes perfect sense why gas planets such as Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are round is because they’re made of gas. Stern then questions how the Earth and Moon round are if they are made out of solid rock but goes on to answer his own question when he explains that once we descend a few hundred miles into the earth, “rocks flow like a fluid.” Under such pressure even solid material will gradually yield. This explains why even the Earth is a sphere. Stern explains the phenomena of mountains that stick up as high as 30,000 feet. He says mountains can not stand much higher otherwise the ground will slowly sink under their weight.
