Week 7Functions
What is a function?A function is a rule that relates how one quantity depends on other quantitiesIt is the relationship between two variables. The first variable determines the value of the second variableThe value of the first variable corresponds to one and only one value for the second variableA great example of this is ohms law which is used in the electrical field. This is V=IR. V is voltage, I is amps and R is resistance. The voltage would depend on what the values of the resistance and amps are
RelationA relation is a set of ordered pairs (x,y)The first part in an ordered pair is the domain (x value)The second part in an ordered pair is the range (y value)For example P:{(2,4)(3,6)(4,8)(5,10)}The domain would be 2,3,4,5The range would be 4,6,8,10
Domain and RangeDomain- is the complete set of possible values of the independent variableThis means it is the set of all possible x-values that will make the function work and will give real y-values
