East Asia in general o More diverse political regimes than any other regions: from liberal democracy to highly repressive dictatorship. o More diverse cultural aspects: muslim/Christian/ Buddhist/ Confucian o Also wide range of economic growth: Japan – “tigers” (Korea & Taiwan). China – poorest countries. S. Korea – inter-Korea summit in 2000 and 2007 o Two Koreas: republic of Korea (South), and DPRK (Democratic People’s republic of Korea) o Two extreme regimes in the Korea peninsular – FH ranking 1.5 vs 7 in 2006. S Korea – early democracy & military coup o Before the military coup d’etat in 1961. S. Korea was democracy with unstable parliamentary gov’t. o Military based dictators: Park Chung-Hee (1961-1979) and Chun Doo- Hwan (1980-1987) S Korea – democratization o The “spring of democratization” – the transfer of power from the authoritarian Fifth Republic of Chun Doo-Hwan in 1987. o Outburst of the demands of democracy: unprecedented economic growth in Korean history and the growth of middle class, coupled with student protest (June, 1987) and growth of civil society.
