REFLECTIVE JOURNAL2Professional practice and practicum courseMy practicum site is a nursing and rehabilitation center that deals with geriatric care. The patient population in the nursing and rehabilitation center were older people who needed special treatment. I work under the supervision of my mentor who has been of great help to me. My supervisor in the facility has assigned me several duties which are a significant opportunity to learn from the facility. The roles and responsibilities I perform at the rehabilitation center equip me with additional skills that are important in nursing (Schmidt et al., 2017). During my practicum, I engaged in various practical activities. I had an exposure to real-life nursing practicewith sensitive patients who needs attention. My problem-solving and critical thinking skills increased as a result because as a nurse, you need to reason some things when practicing alone. My specific focus was falls in geriatric patients and how I can help prevent and reduce them in this patient population.New practice approachesUndertaking my practicum from Coral Reef Nursing Rehabilitation Center provided me with a great opportunity to develop new skills and knowledge pertaining to the provision of care to elderly patients with different conditions. I observed that a nurse requires substantial knowledge and skills in handling sensitive patients. I noted that one needs practical measures to help patients in the recovery process. This includes mobility, nutritional intake and normal body functioning[ CITATION Kim162 \l 1033 ]. The patients also need spiritual, emotional and psychological help. I realized that simple things like hygiene have a great impact on nursing care. This is because non-compliance to hygienic measures can affect the healing and recovery process of patients.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL3Nursing involves taking care of patients. Nursing involves a practical process which helps in patient recovery. The practicum taught me a lot of things that I thought I knew but had no idea. For instance, I thought that patient care was a major aspect of the nursing profession.
