Chemistry 207: Second Review Sheet v 3.0 First Prelim: Thursday, November 9, 7:30-9:00pm You may use any calculator that does not have an alphanumeric keyboard, i.e. devices that store text are not permitted. Graphing calculators are not permitted. Cell phones are not permitted. You will be asked to leave all personal belongings other than pencils, pens, erasers, and calculators at the front of the room where you take the exam. This exam will cover material from Chapters 10, 11, and 24 of Petrucci, as described below. Outline of Topics for Review Simplified Pictures of Chemical Bonding (Chapter 10) Ionic, covalent, and polar covalent bonds. Qualitative use of electrostatic potential maps to describe extent of bond polarity. Qualitative interpretation of electronegativity. Periodic trends in electronegativity. Lewis structures. Basic rules for constructing Lewis structures. Examples: CO 2 , N 2 , CH 4 , NO + , concept of formal charge, CO 3 2- , equivalent resonance structures, N 3 -, inequivalent resonance structures. Exceptions to the octet rule:
