Civil War ExtensionAlexander Mitchell was born November 13, 1940 in the town of Perrysville,Pennsylvania. In his childhood he was well educated in public schools along with his siblings. On April 18, 1861 Mitchell volunteered to join the war effort as a private in the Unions 8thPennsylvania regiment. He was one of the early responders to Lincoln’s order to defend Washington D.C. from Confederate forces after the fall of Fort Sumter and was stationed at Camp Slifer near Chambersburg.
