Q1) Independent-Samples t Test (25 points total)
A parent educator would like to evaluate the effectiveness of a series of pre-natal infant care
classes on maternal anxiety. The parent educator conducted a small study to examine the
potential effect of the 6-week infant care classes on anxiety as measured on a 10-item scale at 6
months post-partum. A composite score ranging from 0 to 10 was computed from the scale for
each subject with 10 indicating the highest level of anxiety. The parent educator recruited 10
expectant first-time mothers to participate in the infant care classes and 12 expectant first-time
mothers with similar demographics who do not participate in the infant care classes. At six
months after giving birth, all participants were surveyed on their level of anxiety. The data are
listed in the table below. The parent educator is interested in a more stringent test and thus
does not posit a particular direction for the results. The alpha level is set at .05 for the
hypothesis test.
