English 120 2/4/08 SPENCER- The Faerie Queen Faith is more important than works in the eyes of God Some extent of credit to heroic exertion Exertion is worked carefully into theology Dwarf: rationality A theology that is staunchly Protestant English Protestant vision Church is trying to settle itself “via media” (the middle of the road in religion) Pride=Catholicism Despair=Calvinism Protestant Reformation takes a satirical position that faith is what saves us Allegory Proud nature produces monstrosity Error is replete with imagery from scripture Protestant wants to return to scripture as the supreme authority of religion Attack on corrupt the priestly class Believe non-priests can have authority over own religion Needs grace unmediated from above Zeal trumps skepticism, doubt Doubt gets mixed up with despair Problem of Biblical interpretation Protestant problem Voluntaristic God chooses freely to give us grace
