Economic, infrastructural, cultural rebuilding Germany Y.A.L.T.A. February 1945 Churchill, Stalin, FDR (France not present) Preempted end of war but knew war was winding down. Territory: -Post war territory of Germany would be greatly diminished-Poland lost territory in east gained in west. Resettlement-Ethnic Germans in Poland and Czechoslovakia were expelled from territory of old German Reich-2/3 of the Germans forced to resettle flooded into west Germany Division of Germany-East Germany- Soviet Union -West Germany- Great Britain -Southeastern Germany - USA-Southwestern Germany France Division of Germany-Soviet Union gains control of anything east of East Germany Poland Czechoslovakia Hungary, Romania Bulgaria -Americans, British, and French couldnt challenge this influence-Known as Soviet satellite states-Warsaw Pact- counter-organization of NATO Potsdam Conference July 1945 Churchill, Stalin, Wilson (France not present) Officially do what was layed out in Y.A.L.T.A. All initially thought of not dividing Germany-US/UK didnt want Soviet Union to gain stronghold in a fractured Germany-Soviet Union thought under united Germany communism could easily take hold Gave nations power over their spheres in Germany Such different political, economic beliefs, decide to split Germany in two Divided into four zones planned in Y.A.L.T.A. for 4 years then split into two Economically- Germany one unit-each influence nation given power to take reparations from their zone in Germany Soviet Zone- Soviet goals: Re-establish German Communist Party (KPD) KPD to be principal rebuilding agent-Funnel ideology, resources, etc-Facilitator homegrown communist party Plunder resources of Soviet Zone to aid Soviet Union in internal reconstruction/to ensure that a reconstructed, revived Germany couldnt threaten...
