CTCS 192 :  The Godfather, The Godfather II -- Who qualifies an American, what allows them to claim that title -- Vito Corleone -- Is Italian but wants his family to assimilate into American culture -- From I to II   transition from Italian to Italian-American to American -- Films are about family, generations, competing cultures, one’s identity -- Michael wears the American military uniform   symbolizes his allegiance to American culture -- Girlfriend Kay represents the transition Michael needs to be Italian-American -- Necessary in the transition, but no longer needed in the end -- World is overtly masculine, patriarchal -- Central theme: Those things in our society often deemed legitimate are often less legitimate. -- Surface does not represent substance -- Legitimate figures are corrupt -- Michael takes over family business -- Alfredo is weak, Sonny is a hothead, Michael is the only one qualified
