Amparbeng 1 Eugene Amparbeng Mrs. Henderson ENG 122 12 Honors 2/08/19 Excalibur Questions 1. A the start of the play Uther faces turmoil due to the rebellion Duke of Cornwall is attempting to start. Uther did try to solve the situation be laying down truces but the Duke refused it. “I spit on your truce, Uther. If you want peace, throw down your swords” (Excalibur 87). This situation was addressed with the help of Merlin. Merlin tells Uther to, “just show the sword,” as he bragged about it (Excalibur 88). 2. The consequence that Uther faced for asking Merlin to perform dark magic is the death of the Duke. The dark magic created, “a frightened crow flies squawking into the face of the Duke’s horse … he is unhorsed and falls, and impales himself on a tent stake” (Excalibur 91). This death impacts the life of Morgana, the Duke’s daughter, for she use ordered by Uther to be sent away. 3. Excalibur is lodged into the stone by Uther. He does this to keep another king from using it because Lord Lot and Lord Uryens joined forces to try to take the sword. Lord Uryens tells his man that, “the King’s sword. I must have it,” as they surround Uther (Excalibur 94). 4. Uther’s death resulted in the Kingdom spiraling out of control into lawlessness. “It is a dark hour … everywhere lawlessness and destruction, and no one to lead us out of it” (Sir Ector 95). Sir Ector says this because the kingdom was without a king for fifteen years. 5. The irony of Arthur removing the sword from the stone is that a young boy has able to do something that grown men were not able to. According to the text Arthur, “ grasps the sword by the hilt and it comes away easily from its stone lock” (97). 6. The kingdom has been in turmoil for years after Uther’s death. Due to this, Arthur has to purge his kingdom from evil by restoring law and order. To accomplish this, Arthur has to work every day, even on his wedding night.
