Amparbeng 1 Eugene Amparbeng Mrs. Henderson ENG 122 12 Honors 11 May 2019 English Literature Questions Group 1: The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe is about a man who is grieving the death of a women name Lenore. Late at night, the sorrowful man was sitting in his room trying to forget about the lost of the women of his dreams. Who is described as a, “rare and radiant maiden” (Poe 228). In the dark he suddenly hears the sharp sound of a person tapping at the door of his room. He calls out to the person that he imagines outside. “I stood repeating. “‘Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door’” (Poe 228). And approaches the to open it just to find out that no one was there. The man is frightened by thing and thinks that the ghost of his deceased loved one has returned for him. “Thrilled me – filled me with fantastic terror never felt before … to still the beating of my heart” (Poe 228). When he goes to open the window that was making the suspected noise, a Raven flies in. He questions the Raven; however, he receives one word as a response. “Tell me what thy lordly name … Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore”” (Poe 228). Throughout the poem the Raven keeps on repeating the work ‘Nevermore’. The relevance of the Raven is the it represents the void the man feels in himself. Olaudah Equiano 1. Amparbeng 2 The slave trade was systematically organized. 2. What was the main purpose of Equiano writing this memoir? To record the truth about the slave trade and the lives of the slaves. 3. What was the motivation behind the slave trader’s behavior towards to slaves? The main motivation was money. 4. Explain how Equiano may have felt once the journey was over? He felt very relieved to be off the ship. 5. Explain what Equiano witnessed onboard the ship? He witnessed people in chains and arranged like sardines in a can. 6. Why were the slaves kept underneath the deck of the ship in the cargo hull? To keep the slaves from seeing how the ship was managed. 7. Why was the travel unbearable? Hot climate and the ship had no ventilation.
