Michael Joyce 2/25/08 Legal 250 Times Have Changed Precedents set by courts in the United States have been overruled due to changes in our society’s values and general public opinions . In southern society during the 1800’s law was serving men and women unequally, and children were allowed to be beaten by their school teachers . Men were the dominant gender during this time period, specifically the white male . Students were allowed to be disciplined using acts of violence for their misbehavior . Even though these cases were ruled differently compared to what they would be ruled today, the law reflected the values of American society during their separate eras . In the case of State vs . Black, James Black’s wife initiated a quarrel with him. Law stated that “A husband is responsible for the acts of his wife, and he is required to govern his household, and for that purpose the law permits him to use towards his wife such a degree of force as is necessary to control an unruly temper and make her behave
