Memorandum To: Fred Cubbage Professor From: Philip Mead Forestry Student Email: pmmead@ ncsu.edu Phone: (336) 465-1817 Date: October 2, 2007 Re: Lab Assignment #3: Estimating Harvesting Costs An analysis was performed on a specific timber stand. The numbers produced by the analysis were then used to perform a cost analysis of the machine and production costs for logging the stand on a cost/hour and cost/ton basis. The stand being evaluated for price per ton is a loblolly pine plantation, planted at 700 trees per acre on a 100 acre cutover site-prepared tract located near the city of Asheboro in Randolph County, NC. This plantation has a site index of 65 feet at a base age of 25 years, with a rotation age of 30 years with no thinning. Stand and stock tables used to obtain volume values were gathered from Amateis (1982). In order to determine the equipment costs, labor and management costs, and equipment production rates, values given for our specific logging crew were used (see Table 1-5).
