Philip Mead 3/31/2008 Forest Entomology's Second Take-Home Exam 1. Explain why the history of land use is important in understanding forest health. As the usage of land changes over time, many of the characteristics and composition of that land change as well. Variables such as water, soil, nutrients, plants, and animals are all a part of a forest system and are used in determining how healthy that system is. The history of land use is important in understanding the nutrient availability and the hydrology of an ecosystem. When the land use of an area is changed, nutrient depletion and availability can occur, along with the hydrology and water availability. When vegetation is removed, the prevention of erosion plays a key role in the healthiness of the forest in preventing sedimentation and ground cover washout. The reduction of vegetation also results in habitat loss and forest fragmentation, which in turn affects the wildlife and insect populations of that forest. Understanding how the use of the land has changed over time can help in determining the biological composition of the land and in turn how healthy it is. In addition to this, land use change contributes a large part to the global carbon cycle and provides a big source of CO 2 . Land use changes, such as converting a forested area to agricultural field, contributes about 1.6 gigatons of carbon per year to the atmosphere. Greater amounts of carbon in the atmosphere can affect forest health. In order to understand forest health knowledge of the land use and its history must be known. Proper forest management practices are key in sustaining good forest health. 2.
