The 99th Street Elementary School, finished in 1955, was built on top of the old canal and opened its doors to over 400 students. Surrounding residential area was also developed. Six years after the landfill is closed, the drinking water is found contaminated and the City of Toone is required to provide an alternative water supply to residents living within a three- mile radius.
