Sophia Burr Professor Fagnan Survey of US History 31 March 2019 Although America looks at the Civil Rights Movement as a movement that happened within 15 years surrounded around the achievements of legal action such as Brown vs. Board of Education , it was much of a way of life for many over decades. It touched thousands of lives and set the course for the future which still affects humanity today. While reading the sources, The Long Civil Rights Movement and the Political Uses of the Past,” and “Seeking Redress in the Streets The Student Movement’s Challenge to Racial Pragmatism and Legal Liberalism, 1960–1961,” I could see how the civil rights movement was not just about African-Americans being able to sit at the same lunch counter but that it was just the tip of the iceberg on how deeply race and of course gender relations went in the heart of America.
