G.M.O. Foods Genetically modified foods have been around for decades, farmers have been doing it by way of breeding programs and agricultural scientists have used radiation and chemicals to induce gene mutations in crops (Brody 1). Nowadays, modifying foods is much more precise. Scientists can create frost resistant spinach by introducing a gene from a fish that lives in icy water. When scientists set out to modify a something, the first thing they do is identify a trait of interest that they would like to use elsewhere. Then they use comparative analysis to decode what part of an organism’s genetic makeup contains the trait of interest (Powell 4). Once the trait is identified, scientists can recreate the gene sequence and load it into a gene gun. Since plant seeds have a rigid structure, a gene gun is used to shoot particles coated with DNA into the plant tissue. Another way that a plants DNA can be altered is with bacteria.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
