LABORATORY REPORT Activity: Homeostatic Imbalances of Thyroid Function Name: Hailey Alsup Instructor: Adrianne Baron Date: 06.11.2019 Predictions 1. TSH levels in patients with primary hypothyroidism are normal 2. Thyroxine (T4) levels in patients with primary hypothyroidism are normal 3. TSH levels in patients with secondary hypothyroidism are low 4. Thyroxine (T4) levels in patients with secondary hypothyroidism are low 5. TSH levels in patients with hyperthyroidism are high 6. Thyroxine (T4) levels in patients with hyperthyroidism are high Materials and Methods 1. Dependent Variable blood levels of TSH and thyroxine and accumulation of radioactive iodine in thyroid 2. Independent Variable thyroid activity 3. Controlled Variables gender, age 4. Why was RIA used to measure Thyroxine while IRMA was used to measure TSH? RIA was used to measure Thyroid because it measures the amount of Iodine that is absorbed by the thyroid gland as well as the thyroid imagine test. IRMA was used to measure TSH 5. How was it used to observe relative amount of iodine accumulated by thyroid gland? It was used to observe relative amount of iodine accumulated by thyroid gland by absorbing the thyroid gland as well as the imagine test that are done. It also was the dependent variable. Results Table 2. Concentration of Thyroxine and Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) in Blood Serum Normal Patient 1 Patient 2 Patient 3 Value Status Value Status Value Status Thyroxine (mg/l) 0.05-0.14 0.01 Low 0.29 High 0.01 Low TSH (mIU/l) 0.35-4.5 8.67 High 0.15 Low 0.04 Low Type of thyroid disorder Primary Hypothyroidism Hyperthyroidism Secondary Hypothyroidism 1. The normal range for total amount of Thyroxine in serum is 0.05 - 0.14 mg/L. For each patient, type in their serum Thyroxine concentration and indicate if it is lower, within, or higher than the normal range. a. Patient with primary hypothyroidism Patient with primary hypothyroidism with have normal or within range because it is the only disease that is characterized by sustained rises in TSH levels. As they increase that is when change occurs. b. Patient with secondary hypothyroidism Patient with secondary hypothyroidism has low levels of concentration because their is a deficiency in the production of thyroid hormone, and disorder of the pituitary gland or hypothalamus.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
