Harlan 1 Logan Harlan U.S. Government Mr. Jaisle 15 March 2019 Was the Use of the Atomic Bomb Necessary? Everyone has heard of the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan but does everyone know what side they take in a discussion about it. I know that when we talk about it I can take either side based on facts or evidence that I did not previously know. Some people feel as if the bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki went against human morale. Some people feel as if it was an informed decision that helped save millions of lives in the process. I am going to be talking about both sides of the argument and be giving evidence that supports both sides. First, I will talk about the side that thinks the dropping of the bombs was something that is acceptable because that seems to be the biggest side. “When you have to deal with a beast you have to treat him as a beast.” Stated by President Truman as justification for what he had decided upon (Snow). This is something would change a lot of people opinions because this is something that has a huge impact on how someone could view this in the sense that it makes it seem like it was a payback thing and that what we did was just retaliation to what they did. Truman thought that since they had done pearl harbor and killed American prisoners that we had a right to do what we did to them (Snow). I believe that this just goes to show how people felt about this because it was something that was and is still very controversial. I can tell that people have very strong positions when it comes to this topic because it not only ended the war but also sacrificed many Japanese lives and some people felt that it was a bit excessive. Truman felt as if

Harlan 2 he had made the right choice by backing up his decision with this statement, and by giving evidence that we had a legitimate reason to. This is one of those topics that is very debatable because everyone has a standpoint on whether it was ok or not and how the people in charge thought about what they did and why they did what they did. The use of the atomic bomb might have killed hundreds of thousands of people, but the use, also saved millions upon millions of others lives (Compton). Japan was still fighting and planned on fighting to the end because that is just how people in Japan worked. The use of the bombs caused them to question whether it was worth fighting them more than was necessary.
