Harrison Huegen 4-15-19 Theater 100 Brian Gligor The play The Real Inspector Hound by Tom Stoppard is a stellar show with an incredible amount of wit, charisma, and charm. The production was performed on March 28 th at the Lab Theater on UTK’s campus. The production company responsible for this production company was the Clarence Brown Theatre. This play was predominantly an undergraduate performance. However, the talent was abundant. Overall, I feel that the production was very effective in establishing itself as a comedy through lighting, the actors’ performance, and the sets and props This play is a classic “whodunit”, and it accomplishes the criteria quite well. Stoppard, a very notable playwright for satire, weaves an intricate play within a play. The time period isn’t said specifically. However, it appears to be in the beginning of the nineteenth century. According to the notes within the program written by director Terry Silver-Alford, people have been interested in murder plays for centuries. Silver-Alford states, “ …Tom Stoppard cleverly models his “whodunit” after [Agatha] Christies’s Mousetrap in a multi-layered “send up” of the entire genre.” The play definitely does this genre proud in its totality. The lighting in The Real Inspector Hound was effective to say the least. On the whole, the lighting was diverse and added to the tone of the play.
