Alexandria Simo Laura McCluskey Eng 152-003 11 November 2017 Apple What weighs 6.14 ounces, functions for 21 hours at a time, and helps control the lives of millions of people around the world? The answer is the iPhone X. With the development of Apples latest products, people can experience the world at their fingertips. However, Apple products were not as technologically advanced from the get-go. Compared to their foundation in the 1970s, Apple Inc. has evolved significantly over the years. A pple Computers, Inc. was founded on April 1, 1976, by college dropouts Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak (Business reference). Prior to the ‘70s, many people were unfamiliar with computers because they were rarely used by the average person, not only because of the cost and size, but the computers also had a very complicated user interface. Computers were more so used by mathematicians and the military. But, Jobs and Wozniak had a vision of changing the way people viewed computers, which was the motivation behind the new company (Business reference). Jobs and Wozniak wanted to make computers that were small and portable enough for people to have them in their homes and offices. In other words, they wanted a computer that was user-friendly. Jobs and Wozniak started out in Job’s garage planning what is now known as the Apple I, a computer without a keyboard, monitor or casing, shown in figure one. (business reference). In 1977, they created the Apple II, “which revolutionized the computer industry by having the first ever color graphics” (business ref). With that, Jobs and Wozniak’s career in the Simo 1

computer industry blew up, sales went from 7.8 million in 1978 to 117 million in 1980, the year Apple went public. In 1985, Wozniak left the company because he had no interest in running Apple Computers. Wozniak leaving led Jobs to hire PepsiCo’s John Sculley. Later, the Apple Computer Company came out with a computer with a graphical user interface and a mouse , called Lisa. However, the Lisa computer proved to be a failure. The Lisa computer was on the market for 10,000 dollars, making it too expensive. On top of that, the graphical user interface consumed the Lisa’s power so that the computer did not work efficiently (Mac The failure of the Lisa computer put Apple computers in a problematic situation. The company started going on a downward spiral, Apple boss John Sculley did not have the power to do much about this. In order to professionalize Apple’s management and marketing, Steve Jobs had lured Sculley away from Pepsi with the sentence: “Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water or do you want a chance to change the world?” (Mac This move did not play out how Jobs had wanted it to. After many disagreements with Sculley, Jobs left in 1985. After leaving Jobs founded his own company NeXT Software and he also bought Pixar from George Lucas, which would later become a huge success in computer animation of such movies as Toy Story , A Bug's Life , Monsters, Inc. , and Finding Nemo (Business ref).
