Separation of Mixtures Lab Purpose: To learn how to separate different components from a mixture Materials: distilled water, magnet, two test tubes, filter paper, balance, funnel, petri dish, mixture of sand, salt, and iron filings in a plastic cup, plastic bag, paper towel Procedure: 1. Use the balance to measure the mass of the mixture. Record the mass. 2. Cover the magnet with the plastic bag and use the magnet to take out the iron filings out of the plastic cup. 3. Deposit the iron fillings in a test tube. 4. Measure and record the mass of the iron filings. 5. Add distilled water into the cup until the salt is dissolved. 6. Put the filter paper in the funnel. 7. Put the funnel in the empty test tube. 8. Pour all the contents from the plastic cup into the funnel. 9. Wait until all the water has left the funnel and is in the test tube. 10. Take the funnel out of the test tube. 11. Pour water into the petri dish to evaporate. 12. Take sand out of the funnel and place it on the paper towel. 13. Let the sand dry. 14. After a couple of days, when the sand is dried and the water has evaporated, leaving the
