His parents died when he was a young child. His mother died fromthe flu hen he was only two years old, and his father when he was eight. After living with their grandmother for about two year after their father’s death, she died as well. This caused all of the boys to go to a boarding school called Harbinger Institute. He and his brothers worked on the farm to pay for their winter classes. He and all of his siblings went to college all of them obtained a bachelor’s degree except for one daughter she wen to a two-year institute.He attended Johnson C. Smith University, majoring in mathematics. When he graduated in 1938 he then went to the University of Michigan to do his graduate studies in mathematics. While there he earned his M.S. and his Ph.D. degrees in 1939 and 1943. Through the years 1942-1946 Stephens was in the Navy working as a Teaching Specialist during his tour. He
